As folks from all over the globe begin their annual Pride Month celebrations, the situation in the United States is less than encouraging for the LGBTQ+ community. National polls released this month show a significant drop in overall support for the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans. Unsurprisingly, Republicans are the source of most of these negative changes.

In most other countries, May 1 is celebrated as May Day, or International Workers Day, and its history is intimately connected with U.S. workers’ long fight for the eight-hour workday. Even so, the U.S. is an outlier in its refusal to formally recognize May Day or International Workers’ Day. This is no surprise, given the Trump administration’s assault on workers and our rights.
